Most Popular Baby Names, Past & Present
Most expectant parents want to find that perfect special name for
their offspring, however few are likely to name their child Apple, Zuma
Nesta, Pilot Inspekter, Moxie Crimefighter, Fifi Trixibelle, Kyd, Sage
Moonblood, Blanket, Audio Science, Tu Morrow, Spec Wildhorse, Ever Gabo,
Zowie, Tabooger, Story, Banjo, Moon Unit or Dweezli (I am not making
these up). Most of us will name our babies something a *little*
more mundane.
In the past children in the US were often named after a close relative
or ancestor, a Biblical name (Mary and its derivatives, Elizabeth, John
and David have remained perennial favorites) and a mother's maiden name
often popped up as given name. (There are quite a few of my relatives
with Lee or Carter as middle names for several generations in my family).
Some names, like fashions, change and cycle back again. Some seem
to disappear almost completely. Anne of Green Gables thought her parents'
names, Walter and Bertha, were beautifully romantic names. L.M Montgomery
published Anne of Green Gables in 1908 and in the early1900s Bertha
and Walter were in the top 20 most popular baby names. Walter currently
ranks around 370 but Bertha has tumbled totally out of the top 1000
names.
Expectant parents often perused through books dedicated to lists of
names, their origins and meanings. With access to the internet, searching
for that perfect name has never been easier.
